Dr. Kim Barbeitos de Sousa grew up in south Florida and earned two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Florida. After graduation, she worked in small animal veterinary hospitals in south Florida and Charlotte, North Carolina as a veterinary nurse. It was during this time that she realized she had a passion for surgery, specifically orthopedic surgery. She received a Master’s of Toxicology from Colorado State University in 2020 and graduated from Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2024. During her veterinary education she also received a certification in Canine Acupuncture from Chi University and became a certified canine rehabilitation therapist from the Canine Rehab Institute. Following graduation, she completed a rotating internship at Michigan State University. She is excited to join Kansas City Canine Orthopedics while she continues to seek further training in orthopedics and surgery for specialization.

Dr. Barbeitos de Sousa is an active individual and enjoys hiking, rock climbing and snowboarding to name a few. She also enjoys spending time with her rescue German Shepherd, Kaya and her two cats Goose and Maverick. Dr. Barbeitos de Sousa previously had four other German Shepherds (Kovu, Kenna, Archer and Keanu) and was actively involved in Dog Sport with them.
